Before I get onto the footballing exploits of the weekend, just a reminder its not all about the outfield happenings on a Saturday afternoon (or Sunday morning if you are in the Boys or Vets teams).
Last Tuesday was the monthly Executive Committee meeting, which at the same time as being very dreary then came be very entertaining with the interaction of certain characters and some of the suggestions that are made. I try to keep everybody’s feet firmly on the ground (that is the accountant in me!) and not be taken in by all the hot air.
So what happened at the weekend…..well much the same as the last few Saturdays but at least none of it was my fault. Well not directly on the pitch anyway, but I guess the manager is always to blame in some respect.
The game was the reverse fixture against local rivals Sutton United to whom we lost 3-2 in the second game of the season. This time it ended up as a 2-0 defeat. For the first 20 minutes we were totally out of it but managed to hold on at 0-0. But as we came back into the match we conceded a unlucky goal from a free kick. For the rest of the match we were their equals with neither team creating many chances. Our two chances did result in two great saves by their keeper which you could say made the difference to the result. Late in the game as we were pushing for the equaliser we gave the ball away in defence to gift them a second goal.
Since I did not have to play in goal this week, thanks to Freer (bad leg), I did get to make a last 5 minutes appearance up front. in that time fellow sub McFarlane delivered a great ball back post but I was unable to convert. It would have been too late to impact on the result but it would have been great to get on the score sheet.
The firsts lost in the Senior Cup, 2-1, conceding a 120 minute goal in extra time. The struggle goes on.
More positively, after their hiccup in the first game of the season, won for the third time.
The Vets to date are won 1, lost 2.
Lucky me, I get to go to the AFA league meeting tomorrow evening. Now they do make Parkfield Executive meetings look positively fun!
